Boys Basketball: Three things learned

1. Bloom fans have short memories. With their team sitting at 14-8, the faithful have grown disgruntled. Much of their angst is directed at first-year coach Ron Ashlaw, a newcomer to the area who arrived via Waukegan. Ashlaw prefers an uptempo style, which is a major contrast from longtime coach Jasper Williams’ defense-first philosophy. Here’s the deal. Many of those same fans had it out for Williams early on during his Bloom tenure, only to grow to respect and appreciate him. Williams’ teams went 18-10, 19-10 and 17-12 his first three seasons at Bloom, with just one regional title. Those fans should have learned from that experience and cut Ashlaw some slack.
2. T.F. South is coming on. The Rebels’ overall mark — 12-11 — is nothing special. However, at 9-2 in the South Suburban Red, they have a chance to earn at least a share of the conference title. If T.F. South can beat Lemont on Friday, that would set up a Feb. 28 showdown with first-place Hillcrest (10-1).
3. Marist needs Nic Weishar. The RedHawks suffered lopsided losses to Marian Catholic, St. Rita and Benet without Weishar, a 6-foot-5 three-year varsity member. Granted, it’s debatable whether the outcomes would have changed with Weishar in the lineup against those top foes. However, without Weishar, Marist’s depth in the post was exposed.
