Boys Basketball: Seton holds off Corliss

Seton’s Christopher Seaton had a scary wake-up call Monday night.

With the Sting’s season on the line at a 2A Carver Regional quarterfinal, this could be it; eight minutes away from no more basketball.

Seaton made sure Seton will play at least 32 more minutes. The senior scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, sparking the Sting to a 62-54 win over Corliss.

“I started to realize this could be my last game,” Seaton said with a smile. “It dawned on me. I was playing like crap, and I needed to play better for my teammates. I needed to be a good leader and a good teammate.”

Seton (7-21) advances to play Carver at 7 p.m. Wednesday at in a regional semifinal.

Franklyn Felix chipped in 15 points Monday for the Sting. Corliss (5-19) was led by Traiq Allen’s 19 points.

For three quarters, a win looked iffy at best. Too many turnovers, too many missed layups, too many missed free throws.

Any and all, but Seaton made sure that wasn’t the story. After two Felix free throws with 7:23 left in the game, Seaton stole the ball, one of his four in the quarter, and found Tim Townsel for an easy fast-break bucket to put Seton up 46-41.

Seaton was far from done. His one-handed dunk capped a coast-to-coast drive to put the Sting up 50-41.

He scored seven points and had three steals in a lightning-quick 14-2 spurt that gave Seton a commanding 54-41 advantage.

“We realized what we had to do, and that’s play defense,” Seaton said. “We’re a young team, and we had pregame jitters. Get rid of those jitters and go from there.”

When Corliss cut the deficit to 56-47 with less than four minutes to go, Seaton had one more answer, another one-handed throw-down.

“We’re getting that experience as we go,” Seton coach Justin Domingo said. “As long as we learn from the mistakes and keep building, giving us that foundation, it will be good.”

Seton committed 15 turnovers over the first three quarters. The Sting was 16-of-57 from the floor for the game, but 8-of-15 in the fourth period.
