Girls Basketball: Three things learned

1. It just looks wrong. Hillcrest, Joliet Catholic, Morgan Park and Bishop McNamara eliminating one another in one Class 3A sectional, and Evergreen Park, De La Salle, Harlan or Phillips guaranteed a title in another? Not a knock on the latter four teams, but the IHSA’s formula for regional representation doesn’t always bring the most equitable fields together.
2. Sometimes a loss can help. You’ve got to think that when Lincoln-Way East lost to Lincoln-Way North at the Medieval Classic for the first time in the teams’ series history, it made more than a few Griffins sharpen their focus on what had been a one-sided rivalry. They had four double-figure scorers instead of two in the regional rematch and totally shut the door on North in East’s 50-22 win.
3. Mount Assisi pride showed. The Eagles can sleep well knowing they left it all on the floor in writing a fantastic final chapter in the Lemont school’s basketball history book. MaryKate Wetzel, Kathleen Murphy, Jess Moriarty and Terri Dearth all had standout efforts during a playoff run in which Mount Assisi won its first sectional game and played Seton tough in the sectional final.
