High School/Local College Sports Roundup for Feb. 25, 2014

Boys Basketball

U-High 53, Southland Prep 28: Michael Gettings had eight points for visiting Southland Prep (5-12).

Thornwood 78, Lincoln-Way North 50: Kenny Bates compiled 11 points, 16 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in guiding Thornwood (21-4, 13-0) to the SouthWest Suburban Red title. Rashaad Alexander had a team-best 23 points for the visiting Thunderbirds and Kaliph Fagan scored 14. Lincoln-Way North fell to 3-20, 1-12.

Joliet West 65, Lincoln-Way East 60: Tony Garcia had 11 points and Austin Winkler (6 rebounds) added 10 to pace host Lincoln-Way East (6-18, 1-12) in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.

Stagg 49, Joliet Central 45: Max Strus poured in 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to vault host Stagg (20-7, 8-5). Kevin White tacked on 11 points and six assists for the Chargers in the SouthWest Suburban Blue.

Oak Forest 60, Fenton 31: David Gray (11 points) and Tom Shute (10) were the primary scorers for visiting Oak Forest (20-5).

Oak Lawn 51, Lindblom 48: Mitch Swatek had 16 points and Joe Cosenza added 10 to boost visiting Oak Lawn (10-14).

Thornton 54, Lincoln-Way Central 44: Damarques Turner’s 18 points ignited visiting Thornton (18-5, 11-2) in the SouthWest Suburban Red. Alex Parks had 17 points for Lincoln-Way Central (12-13, 4-9) and Brad Bass added 13.

Crete-Monee 63, T.F. South 50: Mike Nelson provided 23 points and Tyler Williams chipped in 14 to key host Crete-Monee (14-11). Rashad Lee added nine points and 13 rebounds for the Warriors. Ka-Ton Mayes recorded 13 points for T.F. South (12-13).

Bradley 67, Lincoln-Way West 46: Hayden Witt posted a team-high 17 points for host Lincoln-Way West (12-12, 6-7) in the SouthWest Suburban Red.

Timothy Christian 59, Chicago Christian 44: Trevor Wolterink dropped in 13 points to propel visiting Chicago Christian (8-17).

Thornridge 46, Andrew 41: Darrion Robinson totaled 14 points and 14 rebounds to power visiting Thornridge (8-17, 5-8) in the SouthWest Suburban Red. Aaron Williams chalked up 12 points for Andrew (6-18, 2-11) and Luke Hook (7 rebounds) scored 10.

Reavis 56, St. Laurence 42: Eddie Puha finished with 22 points and Abdal Ishtaiah 18 to spark host Reavis (14-10). Matt Gurgone’s 19 points led St. Laurence (5-21).

Plainfield Central 64, Shepard 57: Jacob Littleton had 17 points to steer host Shepard (9-16). The Astros also received 11 points from Zack Haxel and 10 from Kyle Longfield.

Riverside-Brookfield 66, Providence 55: Miles Boykin scored 24 points to pace host Providence (13-14).

Girls Basketball

Class 3A Solorio Sectional

Phillips 45, Evergreen Park 39: Zoe Monks scored 13 points and Megan Pfister added 10 to lead Evergreen Park (15-15) in the semifinal. In the second game, De La Salle topped Harlan 61-55.

Men’s Volleyball

Clarke 25-25-25, St. Xavier 16-22-16: Moises Lopez had 29 assists and Sam Kull posted 10 kills to aid visiting St. Xavier (2-11).

College Basketball: South Suburban’s men’s and women’s teams will be hosting NJCAA Division II playoff games on Thursday at their South Holland campus, 15800 S. State Street. The women’s team will play Wright College at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game against McHenry at 7:15 p.m.
