Boys Basketball: Lincoln-Way Central bounces Andrew

Updated: March 3, 2014 11:21PM

Lincoln-Way Central and Andrew saw familiar faces Monday night when the teams met in the Knights’ Class 4A regional.

They had just faced one another Friday, a 47-40 Lincoln-Way Central victory to end the SouthWest Suburban Red season.

“That was our concern,’’ Central coach Bob Curran said of playing the same team again. “You don’t know what adjustments they’re going to make.’’

This time, Central ended Andrew’s season with a physical 47-35 quarterfinal victory.

“I think it was good for us because we were able to figure out what they were doing on defense, offense,’’ Central’s Brad Bass said.

Still, Andrew was able to rebound from a 19-11 halftime deficit and cut Central’s lead to 23-22 going into the final quarter.

But Bass made six free throws and Kevin Mampe converted seven in the final period to help send Central (14-13) to the Wednesday semifinal against Homewood-Flossmoor.

A key moment in the fourth quarter was a layup by Mampe for a 37-31 lead with 2:15 left after Luke Newtoff rebounded a missed free throw.

“That was a big play for us,’’ Bass said. “That really helped.’’

A minute later, Bass made two free throws to put the Knights ahead 41-33 with 1:17 left. More free throws sealed the win, including two by Newtoff.

“All of us did a really good job of stepping up and making free throws,’’ Mampe said. “It’s something we’ve been working on in practice a lot.’’

Bass led Central with 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Mampe contributed 13 points.

The victory was Central’s third over Andrew this season.

“It’s hard to beat a team a third time in a season,’’ Curran said. “I’ve heard that so many times.’’

Luke Hook led Andrew (6-20) with 18 points.
