Boys Basketball: Lemont can’t match Benet

Benet didn’t waste any time seizing control during Tuesday night’s Class 4A Lemont Regional semifinal against the host Indians.

The Redwings scored the game’s first eight points and never led by fewer than six points in its 81-36 victory.

Benet (20-7) advances to Friday’s championship game against Waubonsie Valley.

“It was a businesslike approach,” Redwings coach Gene Heidkamp said. “The first game (in the state series) is always a difficult game to play.

“Our emphasis was to come out on defense and stabilize the game. We were kind of sporadic, but we made some shots and played pretty well.”

The Redwings controlled the game from the outset thanks to the hot shooting of Colin Bonnett (18 points). He sank two three-pointers in the opening minutes before Benet had even established the scoring threat of 6-foot-8 Sean O’Mara (10 points, 5 rebounds) in the paint.

Bonnett resides mere miles away from the Lemont school, so getting comfy in the Indians’ cozy gym was not a problem.

“I know all the kids on the other team, so it was nice playing against my friends,” he said. “I felt pretty good out there, but having a good team surrounding me helps. We always seem to find the hot hand.”

Benet led 41-16 at halftime and opened the second half with a 13-0 run. With the game in control early in the third quarter, Heidkamp could rest his starters and provide his bench with ample minutes.

“The thing we feel good about is that we finally have everybody back,” Heidkamp said. “We lost Josh (Yesufu) for three weeks and then Colin for three weeks. We’re deep and we’ve seen guys like (Dan) Roemer and (Dan) Sobolewski step up so we’ve pleased with where we are.”

Three-pointers by Roemer and Collin Pellettieri (9 points) highlighted an 18-3 spurt to open the second half for the Redwings as they cruised to victory.

“Right now we’re trying to play our best basketball at the end of the season,” Bonnett said. “We’re hoping to continue to put two halves together like we did (Tuesday).”
