Down by three goals entering the third period, Lincoln-Way Gold appeared out.
Quite the contrary. Lincoln-Way roared by with four goals to take the lead.
That slim margin, however, was just that: slim. Glenbard tied the game later in the third period then got the winner from Nick Pietro five minutes into overtime for a 6-5 win a Varsity co-op State quarterfinal in Bensenville. Glenbard (31-20-2) will play either AWF or Maine Township in a semifinal Sunday.
“I’m just in shock right now,” said Pietro, who scored two goals in the game. “I don’t even know what to say. It’s amazing.”
With just under six minutes left in the first period, Pietro found the back of the net. Just 40 seconds later, Matt Letmanski scored for a 2-0 lead. Lincoln-Way’s Kyle Barna scored to make it 2-1 after one. Glenbard’s Sam Weiss and Kevin Gould had second-period goals to make it a 4-1 game.
Lincoln-Way (34-15) had an answer, getting goals by Anthony Podder, Dominic Witkowski, Alex Cerda and Barna, to take a 5-4 lead in the third period.
“I told them (between the second and third periods) they’ve got to want it,” Lincoln-Way coach Tony Lindeman. “They needed to go out and seize the opportunity, and they did.”
Glenbard got the equalizer from Chris Conklin to force overtime.
“I was panicking so much,” Pietro said. “I just blacked out. I could not believe that they came back.”
For Glenbard coach Jason Hawkins, panic was not an issue.
“We knew we had a bad stretch of a couple of minutes, giving up some power-play goals and rebounds” he said. “But we also knew if we played the way we did the first 21/2 periods then this was our game.”
