A green fedora and a puck.
Those were the gifts Union College (N.Y.) goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos received from his teammates after shutting out host Brown 3-0 in an East Coast Athletic Conference hockey game March 1 in Providence, R.I.
Three days later, the Tinley Park resident received another honor as he was chosen the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 4.
“It feels good to be honored for how you played,” Sakellaropoulos said. “I just wanted to play, and the team played very well in front of me. I just made a few key saves.
“Our starter (Colin Stevens) has been playing great. This was the last game of the regular season. The coaches gave him the day off and I got to play. Colin’s been great all year.”
In blanking the Bears, Sakellaropoulos recorded 26 saves to notch his first career shutout. One save in particular stood out for the freshman, who helped the Dutchmen earn back-to-back shutouts for just the second time since 1998.
“In the first period, one of their guys split our ‘D’ (defense),” Sakellaropoulos said. “He went to his backhand on a breakaway and I stopped him with my left pad.
“Getting my first shutout was awesome. Our guys battled that night in front of me. This was a great experience to have. They gave the team puck to me after the game, and I got to wear the green fedora the team gives out to the player who works the hardest in that game.”
To date, Sakellaropoulos, who graduated from Andrew in 2012, has appeared in eight games (6 starts) this season for Union. He’s 4-2-2 with a .903 save percentage and a 2.40 goals-against average. Sakellaropoulos made 158 saves and allowed 17 goals.
Sakellaropoulos also was chosen the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week for the period ending Dec. 17 after making 34 saves in a 4-1 win Dec. 13 at St. Cloud State.
Union finished the regular season 24-6-4 overall and 18-3-1 in the ECAC, good for first place. The Dutchmen are ranked No. 3 by United States College Hockey Online in Division I behind Minnesota and Boston College.
Bowling over the competition
St. Ambrose’s Maggie Suchoski (Evergreen Park) was named to the 2013-14 All-Midwest Collegiate Conference Bowling Team.
Suchoski, a senior, won the MCC women’s individual championship March 2 at May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Evergreen Park resident totaled 1,212 pins over her six games, averaging 202.
Suchoski, whose high game was a 225, rolled a 216 in her final game, enabling her to defeat her nearest competitor by 48 pins.
As a team, St. Ambrose lost in the semifinals 3-1 to Clarke.
Hard to Argue
Northern Illinois wrestler Tyler Argue (Mount Carmel) was nominated for the Mid-American Conference’s Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Jan. 4.
Competing in the 51st Annual Midlands Championships, the junior finished eighth at 141 pounds. The Matteson resident advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 victory over Utah Valley’s Avery Garner. Argue then lost 5-3 to Northwestern’s Pat Greco.
In the consolation bracket, Argue recorded an 11-3 major decision over George Mason’s Sahid Kargbo before incurring an 8-1 loss to Ethan Raley, of Indiana.
Argue concluded the tournament with an 8-6 loss to Ryan Fillingame, of Adams State, in the seventh-place match.
