In the new-look SouthWest Suburban Red – with Stagg out and Lincoln-Way Central in – Lincoln-Way North will attempt to defend its title despite losing eight key seniors from last season.

“We have a lot of guys who have been waiting for their chance to get a lot of playing time and I expect them to step up big and really surprise people,” North coach Pat Shaughnessy said.

Shaughnessy is counting on Evan Surma and Nate Pakosz to step up as field players. The Phoenix will be solid in net with senior Shamus Shields returning after taking over in goal midway through last season and thriving.

Shaughnessy is hoping it’ll add up to a quicker rebuilding process than some might expect.

“Our goal is to win conference and I think we have a good chance at competing for a chance at that as well as trying to make as deep a run into sectionals as we can,” he said.

North opened Tuesday with a 15-4 win over Shepard co-op.
