High School Sports Roundup for March 25, 2014

Baseball

Lockport 11, Wauconda 0: Tyler Hair (2-for-4) drove in three runs and scored twice, and Russ Hoh (2-for-2) added two RBI with three runs to lead Lockport (1-0) at the Southern Illinois Miners Tournament in Marion. Mike Formella allowed three hits and struck out nine in four innings to earn the win.

St. Laurence 7, Boulder (Colo.) 0: Alex Hitney struck out nine over five innings to pick up the win for St. Laurence (1-0) in Tucson, Ariz. At the plate, Nate Tholl went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Roger Wilson went 2-for-3, and Frank Greco knocked in two runs.

Softball

Andrew 5, Plainfield Central 2: Hannah Thielmann went the distance in Andrew’s season opener, allowing two runs (one earned) and four hits while striking out three and walking none. Kara Meter went 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run single, and Abbey Purcell and Jordyn Vogt each had an RBI single for the Thunderbolts (1-0).

Richards 16, T.F. North 0: Jordan Battles went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI to key an offensive onslaught for Richards (1-0). Emily Wetzel (2-for-3, HR, triple, three RBI) and Kaitlyn Fetchko (2-for-3, double, RBI) also contributed for the Bulldogs.

Boys Volleyball

Marist d. Providence 25-6, 25-21: Jake Moran’s all-around stellar performance (6 kills, 4 aces, 8 digs, 4 blocks) keyed host Marist. Dan Anzelmo added nine digs and Tim Hauser dished out 13 assists for the RedHawks.

Shepard d. Marian Catholic 24-26, 25-15, 25-20: Doug Nelson posted 11 service points and 16 assists to lead visiting Shepard (1-0). Sean McGlone had five kills and 10 digs for Marian Catholic (0-1).

Stagg d. Richards 12-25, 25-22, 25-21: Tom Matenis and Trevor Crain posted nine and seven kills, respectively, to aid host Stagg (1-0).

Boys Water Polo

Bradley 12, Shepard co-op 3: Jerry Zachery scored twice and Christian Reys once to guide Shepard co-op.

Homewood-Flossmoor 11, Lincoln-Way East 3: Broc Thompson’s four goals powered host Homewood-Flossmoor (4-6) in the SouthWest Suburban Blue opener for both teams.

Girls Water Polo

Lincoln-Way East 15, Homewood-Flossmoor 3: Aimee Schaaf scored four goals to propel host Lincoln-Way East (5-1, 2-0) in the SouthWest Suburban Blue. Haley McCabe and Taryn Linke chipped in three goals apiece for the Griffins.

Badminton

T.F. North 9, Argo 6: T.F. North knocked off Argo despite the Argonauts’ Karolina Nieckarz winning her No. 2 singles match and teaming up with Kathy Ha to win No. 1 doubles.
