Baseball

Andrew 6, Normal West 0: Stefan Urosezit pitched six shutout innings and struck out eight to help Andrew earn a season-opening victory.

Brother Rice 5, Lyons 4: Alex Alarcon got the win and Kevin Sullivan drove in a run for Brother Rice (6-1).

Harlan 3, Shepard 2: Bob Peterka went 1-for-3 with an RBI for Shepard. Brett Smith struck out seven over three innings, but took the loss.

Mount Carmel 4, Bremen 1: In the second game of a doubleheader, Mike Lorenzi (1-0) held Bremen to one unearned run and five hits while striking out four as he earned the victory. At the plate, Ako Thomas went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Malik Carpenter (1-for-3) knocked in a run for Mount Carmel (2-0).

O’Fallon 3, Stagg 2: Max Strus hurled five scoreless innings, scattering four hits and striking out three, but came away with a no-decision in Stagg’s season-opening loss in eight innings. Drew Bolero knocked in both runs for the Chargers.

Providence 6, Plainfield East 3: Brent Villasenor earned the victory and Phil Kunsa had an RBI in Providence’s first game of the season. Dylan Rosa pitched four innings for the Celtics, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five.

St. Rita 13, Kenwood 1: Nick Goldsmith starred at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double, triple and three RBI. Tony Faron hit a two-run home run. Matt Lenzen earned the win for St. Rita (5-0).

Beecher 13, Grace Baptist 1: Garrett Short’s three-run double keyed visiting Beecher (1-0). Chase Wyatt (6 strikeouts) pitched four hitless inning in relief for the victory.

Softball

Immaculate Conception 14, Queen of Peace 2: Emily Janosik (1-2) had a double and drove in the both runs for Queen of Peace.

Richards 5, T.F. South 0: Sara Tobin pitched a one-hitter, striking out five and walking two, for Richards (2-1, 2-0) in the South Suburban crossover. Sara Kiziak (2-for-4) hit a double, drove in a run and scored twice.

Lady Warriors Southern Classic

Owensboro (Ky.) 8, Sandburg 1: Katie Krzus belted a first-inning homer for Sandburg (4-1) in its third and final game of the day in Lebanon, Tenn.

Sandburg 10, Greenbriar (Tenn.) 6: Lauren McCaughey (2-for-3) rapped a two-run single and a two-run double to propel visiting Sandburg. Briana Soltis and Katie Krusz each added two hits and two RBI for the Eagles.

Sandburg 6, Wilson Central (Tenn.) 5: Karli McLaughlin’s RBI single in the top of the seventh capped a three-run rally for visiting Sandburg. Briana Soltis (4-for-4, 3 runs) led the Eagles with two homers and three RBI.

Girls Soccer

Lincoln-Way Central 1, Hinsdale South 0: Sara Petrone scored a goal with an assist from Sabrina DiFiori to lift Lincoln-Way Central (2-1) to victory.

Boys Volleyball

Andrew d. Marian Catholic 25-8, 25-15; Andrew d. Shepard 25-9, 25-16; Shepard d. Marian Catholic 25-19, 25-21: Andrew earned victories over Marian Catholic and Shepard on the first day of the Marist Invitational. Neal Hausmann totaled 11 kills between the two matches and Nick Vander Zanden added 10. Sanil Thomas led the Thunderbolts with 22 assists. Shepard (2-2) bounced back with a win against the Spartans as Doug Nelson led the way with four kills and 13 assists.

Lincoln-Way Central d. Eisenhower 21-25, 25-19, 15-11: Neal Brown led the way with 16 kills and three blocks as Lincoln-Way Central outlasted Eisenhower at Marist. Adam Sargis added 12 kills and eight digs, Connor Hipelius contributed seven kills and three blocks, and Erik LeBeau recorded six kills, 15 digs and two aces.

Honolulu Iolani Invitational: Mitch Weiler pounded 25 kills as Brother Rice (3-0) defeated Hawaii Baptist 26-24, 25-21 and Iolani 25-14, 29-27.

College Baseball

Ceremony postponed: Because of inclement weather, Saturday’s jersey retirement of Lewis’ all-time winningest baseball coach, Irish O’Reilly, will be moved to May 3.

Kankakee 8, Prairie State 6: Bobby Sheppard (2-for-5, double, stolen base), Dan Ohde (2-for-4, run) and Chris Halley (2-for-4, RBI, run) led Prairie State (4-4).

Joliet Junior College 7, Waubonsee 3: Josh Wojnarowski tossed 82/3 innings and allowed three earned runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out five to pick up the win. Ben Kirchler and Ron Sessler each had three hits, Tyler Thorson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and TJ Condon knocked in a pair of runs for Joliet Junior College (9-8).

Triton 5, South Suburban 2: Stefano Belmonte (4-for-5) doubled twice and drove in two runs to pace visiting South Suburban (6-7).

Men’s Volleyball

Great Lakes Conference Tournament

Cardinal Stritch d. St. Xavier 25-21, 25-10, 25-18: Moises Lopez (29 assists) and Justin Cousin (12) were among the standouts for Lewis (6-15) in the semifinal in Perrysburg, Ohio.

St. Xavier d. Siena Heights 25-23, 26-28, 25-20, 25-20: Justin Cousin recorded 17 kills and Moises Lopez had 40 assists to spark St. Xavier in the quarterfinal. Sean Berry tacked on 13 kills for the Cougars.

Women’s Tennis

Lewis 8, McKendree 1: Zsofia Kranczicki earned a victory in her No. 1 singles match and partnered with Zsofia Lanstiak to win No. 1 doubles as Lewis cruised. Lanstiak picked up a victory in No. 2 singles, while Ana Banic and Megan Nguyen won at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, respectively, and teamed up to win their No. 2 doubles match.
