High School/Local College Sports Roundup for April 6, 2014

Baseball

Brother Rice 5, Oak Lawn 1: Colin Shea had a double and two RBI, and Ian McGinnis (2-1) pitched a four-hitter as Brother Rice (8-3) won at home.

Lincoln-Way Central 5, Joliet Catholic 4: Shane Stover (2-for-3, 2 RBI) singled home courtesy runner Sean Studer (two runs) with two outs in the top of the 10th to propel Lincoln-Way Central (4-1). Tony Kestel added a two-run single for the Knights at Plunkett Park in Elmhurst. Reliever Joe Davi (1-0) pitched four hitless innings for the victory. Aaron Markley had two RBI for Joliet Catholic (6-2), including a game-tying groundout in the seventh that forced extra innings.

Richards 14, Stagg 4: Shawn Chiramonte’s two-run single ignited a six-run outburst in the sixth and final inning for host Richards (3-2). Noel Castro (3-for-4), Mike Marchione (2-for-3) and Shane Mills (2-for-4) tacked on two RBI apiece for the Bulldogs, while Charlie Zeschke and Nate Natividad each scored three runs. C.J. Casey had a two-run double for Stagg (1-5).

Marian Catholic 5, Bradley 4: Luiscarlo Avila (1-for-3, 2 runs) scored the deciding run on a ninth-inning error and also earned the win in relief to spark visiting Marian Catholic (7-5). Patrick Schmidt (single) and Dan Janowski (sacrifice fly) registered RBI for the Spartans.

Morgan Park 12, Kenwood 6: Lavar Reed smashed a two-run double and totaled four RBI to guide Morgan Park (6-2) at Kroc White Sox Field. Elijah McKinnis (2-for-4) added two RBI for the Mustangs.

College Baseball

Indianapolis 4-9, Lewis 0-8: Lewis (15-14, 9-8) couldn’t hold a 7-0 lead in the nightcap and dropped two Great Lakes Valley Conference games on the road. Cale Robinson slugged three doubles for the Flyers in Game 2, but Indianapolis scored seven times in the bottom of the ninth to erase an 8-2 deficit.

Lake County 3-0, South Suburban 2-6: Ryan Waaso (4-1) pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts in the nightcap as South Suburban earned a split at home. Steve Letz was 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for the Bulldogs in Game 2 and Jake Hickey went 1-for-3 with a homer, a run and three RBI. Hickey was 2-for-4 with a homer, a run and two RBI in Game 1.

College Softball

Bellarmine 3-11, Lewis 2-3: Scarlett Powers hit three homers, including the game-winner in the eighth inning of the opener, as Bellarmine swept host Lewis (10-19, 4-12 Great Lakes Valley) Sunday.

St. Xavier 2-9, Ashford 0-0: Megan Nonnemacher (9-1) pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Nicole Nonnemacher (8-2) threw a three-hitter in the nightcap as NAIA fourth-ranked St. Xavier (19-3) won twice in Clinton, Iowa. Kasey Kanaga was 3-for-4 with a run in the opener and Katie Sears (Mother McAuley) homered.

College men’s golf

Lewis 11th at Midwest Regional No. 3: Lewis shot a 297 to finish with a 36-hole total of 607, good for 11th place at the Midwest Regional No. 3 hosted by Bellarmine in Batavia, Ohio. Ryan Frederick (Lockport) led Lewis with a 147, tying for ninth, and Alex Thode shot 151.
