Local College Sports Roundup for April 13, 2014

College Softball

St. Xavier 1-10, St. Francis 0-0: Nicole Nonnemacher (12-2) pitched an eight-hitter and pinch-runner Denise Anderson scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the eighth as host St. Xavier edged St. Francis in the opener of a doubleheader. The NAIA No. 11 Cougars (29-3, 13-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic) won the nightcap 10-0 in five innings as Megan Nonnemacher (14-1) pitched a two-hitter. Megan James drove in three runs in Game 2 for St. Xavier, which has won 13 in a row. St. Francis is 14-16, 70-5.

College Baseball

Roosevelt 7, St. Xavier 6: Despite two doubles, two runs and two RBI from Brad Myjak (Mount Carmel), St. Xavier fell 7-6 to Roosevelt in CCAC play at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood. The teams were scheduled to play a second (nonconference) game, but it was rained out in the second inning. St. Xavier is 15-20 overall, 10-5 in the CCAC.

South Suburban 16, Kishwaukee 15: Cody Moskovsky was 4-for-5 with a run and four RBI as South Suburban got past Kishwaukee in South Holland. Also contributing for the Bulldogs were Matt Hoge (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Steve Letz (1-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI), Stefano Belmonte (4-for-5, 4 runs, 2 RBI) and Jake Hickey (4-for-6, 2 runs, 2 RBI).

College Men’s Golf

Lewis tied for sixth: Lewis is tied for sixth after one round of the Midwest Regional No. 4 at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. The Flyers shot 300, six shots behind co-leaders Missouri-St. Louis and Wayne State, with Ryan Frederick (1-over 73) and Robert Dofflemyer (75) leading the way.

College Women’s Golf

Lewis in fifth after one round: Rachel Sweeney shot a 9-over 79 and Danielle Coffman had an 80 as Lewis was in fifth place after one round of the Triton Spring Invitational at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis with a 329.

St. Francis eighth in tourney: St. Francis finished eighth in the 19-team Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal with a 36-hole total of 676. Krystal Garrison (Lockport) led the Saints, finishing 12th at 88-80—168.
