High School/Local College Sports Roundup for April 15, 2014

Baseball

Brother Rice 15, St. Joseph 3: Kyle Hilliard went 3-for-3 with three RBI to pace visiting Brother Rice (12-3, 1-0) in the Catholic League crossover. Danny Beese and Kevin Sullivan added two-run doubles for the Crusaders in the five-inning game. Ian McGinnis (3-1) tossed a three-hitter and fanned eight for the winners.

St. Rita 8, De La Salle 1: Tyler Halas (2-for-4) ripped a two-run single (3 RBI) and Jake Shepski added a two-run double to power visiting St. Rita (16-0, 1-0) in the Catholic League crossover. Mike Costanzo (5-0) and reliever Sean Jaycox (2 innings) combined to allow three hits and strike out 12 for the Mustangs. Jalen Davis scored a run for De La Salle (5-3, 0-1).

Chicago Christian 5, Guerin 0: Dan Vos (4 innings) and Adam Schoenle combined on the shutout for host Chicago Christian (9-6, 3-1) in the Suburban Christian Gold. Mike Santarelli led the way offensively with two hits and three RBI.

St. Laurence 12, St. Ignatius 0: Alex Hitney (1-hitter, 10 strikeouts) gave up one unearned run over six innings to spark visiting St. Laurence (12-1, 1-0) in the Catholic League crossover. Anthony Chimera hit a two-run double for the Vikings and Brad Wood (2-for-3, RBI) scored twice.

Illiana Christian 4, Riverside-Brookfield 3: Lucas Miedema’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Cody Koehler with the winning run for Illiana Christian (3-4, 1-1) in the Metro Suburban. Caleb Jonkman surrendered two unearned runs on four hits in pitching a complete game for the Vikings.

Girls Soccer

Tinley Park 2, Shepard 1: Goals by Jenna Rivera and Jess Garnica propelled host Tinley Park (6-2, 4-0) in the South Suburban crossover.

Lincoln-Way West 3, Stagg 1: Meghann Lange, Natalie Tannura and Brianna Heyer netted goals for visiting Lincoln-Way West (8-1) in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Reavis 7, Argo 0: Celeste Lara and Karina Lopez each posted two goals and an assist for host Reavis (4-5, 3-2) in the South Suburban Red.

Lincoln-Way East 1, Joliet Central 0: Katie Wilson (4 saves) notched her fourth shutout for visiting Lincoln-Way East (7-3-1) in the SouthWest Suburban crossover. Samantha Fiorella had the goal for the Griffins, courtesy of an assist from Anna Power.

Lemont 6, Oak Lawn 0: Aleksandra Mihailovic and Kim Jerantowski had two goals apiece for host Lemont (4-0-1, 4-0) in the South Suburban crossover.

Boys Volleyball

Richards 25-25, Argo 16-17: Dan Krasich totaled 28 assists and five aces to boost visiting Richards (12-4, 2-0) in the South Suburban Red. Ed Karalius tacked on 11 kills for the Bulldogs.

Joliet Catholic 25-25, IMSA 12-23: Aron Goeken had 21 assists, four aces and three kills for host Joliet Catholic (8-3). Blake Reardon chipped in 12 kills for the Hilltoppers.

Marian Catholic 25-25, Homewood-Flossmoor 14-17: Zak Piekarski’s 19 assists and four kills paced host Marian Catholic (4-10). Liam Fagan added 12 digs for the Spartans.

Oak Forest 25-25, Illiana Christian 22-17: Dylan Ross had seven kills to pave the way for host Oak Forest (10-6).

Badminton

Lincoln-Way Central quadrangular: Jana Mudrock (No. 1 singles) won both of her matches in helping Lincoln-Way Central post 6-2 victories over Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way West. The Knights also lost to Lockport 7-1 in the SouthWest Suburban meet. Alex Sutor went unbeaten in singles for Lincoln-Way West, which topped Homewood-Flossmoor 6-2 and tied Lockport 4-all.

Boys Tennis

Tinley Park 3, Richards 2: Dan Daluga and Joe Werner prevailed at No. 1 singles for host Tinley Park (2-3) in the South Suburban crossover.

Bradley 6, Lincoln-Way North 1: Graham Rodig and Norm Palmer (No. 1 doubles) posted a victory for host Lincoln-Way North (3-2, 0-1) in the SouthWest Suburban Red.

Marian Catholic 4, Carmel 1: Kyle Scheffers (No. 1) and Patrick Murday (No. 2) had singles victories for visiting Marian Catholic (13-2, 2-0) in the East Suburban Catholic.

Reavis 5, Bremen 0: Patrick Maziarz and Gilberto Romero posted a victory at No. 2 doubles for host Reavis (3-4, 2-1) in the South Suburban crossover.

Boys Water Polo

Lockport 14, Andrew 9: Zach Elias scored five goals and Jake Speechley added four to carry visiting Lockport in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Homewood-Flossmoor 10, Bradley 3: Broc Thompson had five goals and Jakobi McClellan stopped 13 shots to steer visiting Homewood-Flossmoor in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Stagg 12, Lincoln-Way West 5: Zack Amendola had five goals and Lane Holin made 15 saves to guide visiting Stagg in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Sandburg 9, Lincoln-Way Central 8: Tristan Funk netted four goals to lead host Lincoln-Way Central in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Girls Water Polo

Andrew 15, Homewood-Flossmoor 3: Megan Hofer’s nine goals led visiting Andrew in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Homewood-Flossmoor 7, Bradley 6: Megan Dunlavy (5 goals) and Rebecca Tanner (14 saves) were the standouts for host Homewood-Flossmoor in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Lincoln-Way Central 8, Sandburg 4: Kristi Howe had five goals and Sabrina Miglorini recorded 19 saves to spur visiting Lincoln-Way Central in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.

Girls Lacrosse

Glenbard West 15, Marian Catholic 10: Celeste Friel scored a team-high six goals for host Marian Catholic (4-5).

College Baseball

St. Francis 3, Robert Morris 1: Jake Butler (7-1) tied a school record with his 30th career victory as visiting St. Francis (25-15, 13-3) captured the opening game of the Chicagoland Athletic Conference doubleheader. Butler went the distance in the 13-inning contest, scattering two hits and striking out 11. Mario Hernandez and David Kuhne provided RBI singles in the last frame to boost the Saints.
