The first Lincoln-Way Cup takes place at 9 a.m. Wednesday with all four Lincoln-Way schools – East, Central, West and North – battling it out in the middle of spring break at the East courts in Frankfort.
The Lincoln-Way schools never will be confused with powerhouses such as New Trier or Hinsdale Central, but the sport is growing in the areas that these schools draw from. East coach Chris Olson said there are more than 180 athletes playing boys and girls tennis at the four schools.
“The idea for the mini-tournament spawned from a desire of the head coaches in our district to really try to promote our sport within the community,” Olson said. “We will award a traveling trophy and it will be a connection from one team to the next, helping to create a legacy for so many of the memorable teams that the four schools produce from one year to the next.’’
The format for the tournament is a two-singles, three-doubles round-robin. Total wins will determine the champion.
