Girls Soccer: Three things learned

1. Sandburg makes a statement. The Eagles showed they can hang with the state’s best teams, topping Benet 2-1 on Thursday in the Naperville Invitational behind goals from Jayna Kozlowski and Rachel Mokersky. Sandburg also scored two SouthWest Suburban Blue wins last week, topping Lockport and Homewood-Flossmoor to improve to 3-0 in league play. The Eagles could wrap up the Blue crown this week with victories over Bolingbrook and Stagg.

2. Bloom is rolling over conference competition. The Blazing Trojans are 4-0 in Southland Conference play, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 27-0. The team’s biggest win came Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Crete-Monee. Bloom will meet the Warriors again May 13. Jasmin Villanueva has the led way, scoring seven goals in conference play. Bloom is 7-1, winning seven straight since a 6-2 loss to Lincoln-Way West in its season opener.

3. Audrey Pearson is tough to score on. The Lincoln-Way West goalkeeper tied a program record with her 11th shutout of the season in Saturday’s 0-0 tie with Lemont. It was the fifth straight shutout for Pearson, who has a 0.40 goals-against average. She will have plenty of opportunities to break the record, beginning Tuesday when she and the Warriors face a big test against Lincoln-Way North. West hosts Thornwood on Thursday.
