Andrew wrapped up its SouthWest Suburban Red crown Tuesday in a fashion befitting the way the Thunderbolts rolled through the conference all season.
The T-bolts grabbed a 4-1 first-quarter lead over Lincoln-Way Central and cruised to a 10-4 win in New Lenox behind four goals each from Genny McCarthy and Megan Hofer.
The victory assured Andrew (18-5, 9-1) at least a share of its first conference title since 2011, and the T-bolts can win the championship outright with just one more win in their final three league contests.
“It’s awesome,” McCarthy said. “It’s the first of our three-step goal for the season, with sectionals and state next. A lot of our team is seniors and we want to go out on a high note.”
The contest was far different from the last time the two teams met April 1, when Andrew pulled out a 6-4 overtime win.
The defending state runner-up Knights (9-9, 6-4) — who were led by two goals from Liz Klock — struggled to get anything going offensively against a stingy Andrew defense.
McCarthy, meanwhile, led the T-bolts’ hot start, scoring three times in the first 4:48 of the game.
“We’ve been trying to work on getting off to fast starts all year,” Andrew coach Mike Kuziel said. “We know we have the ability to jump on teams from the start and it was good to see, especially in the pool that we’re going to play sectionals in.”
Hofer scored both second-quarter goals to give Andrew a 6-1 halftime lead.
Down 8-1, Central finally got going late in the third, going on a 3-0 run and pulling to within 8-4 when Kim Bernhard closed the third-quarter scoring on a lob shot.
Andrew’s defense, though, took it the rest of the way.
“We definitely do team defense,” Andrew goalie Anna Tamulonis said. “We don’t just rely on one player. We’re playing great right now and hopefully we can keep it going in sectionals.”
Tamulonis made eight saves.
Courtney Carter and Caily Friel added a goal each for the T-bolts. The Knights got a goal from Cailey Davern.
The teams could meet again in the postseason, as Andrew is the No. 2 seed and Central No. 3 in the sectional hosted by the Knights.
