Lincoln-Way East 7, Plainfield Central 3: Mitch Matuszewski (2-for-3, 2 runs) belted a solo homer and an RBI double to spark host Lincoln-Way East (10-11). Kyle Keuch tacked on a two-run single for the Griffins and Jack Dwyer scored twice. Brian Christianson (unearned run) surrendered two hits through five innings for the winners.
Lemont 3, Lincoln-Way West 0: Jake Latz gave up four hits and struck out 13 in going the distance for host Lemont (20-1). Jake Terrazas posted an RBI single for the Indians and Ryan Folliard scored two runs. Zach Speaker, Ryan Hastings, Dan Brokop and Jake Robbins provided hits for Lincoln-Way West (21-1).
De La Salle 4, St. Ignatius 3: Joe Gazzi’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth made the difference for De La Salle (14-7, 9-5) in the Catholic League White. Winner Damian Bertucci surrendered one hit in four innings of relief.
Andrew 10, Stagg 7: Ramon Padilla (2-for-4) swatted a two-run single and Tom Bushnell (1-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) tacked on a solo homer to vault host Andrew (7-12) in the SouthWest Suburban crossover. Nick Nowak (3-for-3) garnered three RBI for Stagg (7-14).
Brother Rice 7, Loyola 3: Jake Barry’s grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh keyed Brother Rice (19-6, 8-2) in the Catholic League Blue. Kevin Musielak fanned six in pitching a complete game for the Crusaders.
Chicago Christian 7, Illiana Christian 5: Ron Clark and Jack DeVries slugged RBI singles in the eighth inning to catapult visiting Chicago Christian (16-10-1). Lucas Miedema (2-for-4) recorded two runs and an RBI for Illiana Christian (7-10).
Sandburg 15, Plainfield East 9: Julian Gutierrez walloped a grand slam and Dan Santiago (3-for-5) added three RBI to power host Sandburg (16-4).
T.F. North 13, Hubbard 3: Juan Gutierrez went 3-for-3 with two RBI in showing the way for host T.F. North (7-14).
Bolingbrook 7, Lincoln-Way Central 6: Shane Stover (2-for-4, run) generated two RBI and Collin Brauer (RBI) added two runs in aiding host Lincoln-Way Central (16-6) in the SouthWest Suburban crossover.
Ag. Science 11, Holy Trinity 10: Mike Cullen doubled in the bottom of the 10th and scored on Cleo Whisenton’s single to lift Ag. Science (20-3). Mike Cassidy added two hits and two RBI for the Cyclones.
Oak Forest 7, T.F. South 1: Brian Richard’s three doubles and three RBI steered host Oak Forest (14-7, 7-3) in the South Suburban Blue. Joe Muller chipped in two RBI for the Bengals. T.F. South fell to 13-7, 7-4.
St. Laurence 15, Mount Carmel 6: Mike Kornacker pitched six innings and also went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and three RBI to power visiting St. Laurence (21-2, 9-1). John Riordan (3-for-4, 3 runs) and Kevin White also bashed two-run homers for the Vikings in the Catholic League Blue. A.J. Lewis (3-for-4) had a two-run double and three RBI to pace Mount Carmel (17-4, 8-2).
St. Patrick 11-3, Marian Catholic 5-8: Chris Austin scored a pair of runs for host Marian Catholic (12-10, 4-4) in Game 1 of the East Suburban Catholic doubleheader. The Spartans rebounded in the finale as Patrick Schmidt (2-for-3) racked up three RBI and Michael Bainbridge drilled a two-run single.
Crete-Monee 3-2, Beecher 1-5: Chase Wyatt (no earned runs) pitched a four-hitter to lead host Beecher (12-7) in the second game. Justin Roggemann (2-for-3) and Marshall Landis each scored twice for the Bobcats, who also received an RBI single from Tanner Saddler. Crete-Monee (9-9) took the opener behind Brandon Hickey’s complete game (4-hitter, 12 strikeouts) and Logan Kent’s two-run homer.
Notre Dame 8-7, Marist 0-8: Ryan Kairis’s two-run single in the bottom of the second highlighted a six-run spree for Marist (12-9, 5-2) in Game 2 of the ESCC doubleheader. Pat Meehan pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings for the win and also scored two runs. Barrett Callaghan’s double was one of four hits in the opener for the RedHawks.
Tinley Park 6-8, Rich East 0-1: Mark Suarez scored two runs in each five-inning game for host Tinley Park (7-10). Quinn Kelly also starred for the Titans, providing a two-run single in the opener and two runs in the nightcap. Brandon Williams threw a four-hitter and struck out seven for the Titans in Game 1. Zach Berger (6 strikeouts) followed with a one-hitter in the finale.
Carmel 10-3, Joliet Catholic 4-7: Alec Melone (3-for-3) and Rylan Bannon (2-for-4) each registered two RBI for visiting Joliet Catholic (17-5, 5-3) in the second game of the ESCC twin-bill. Nick Dalesandro blasted a two-run homer for the Hilltoppers in the opener.
Seton 7-12, Hales 0-8: Tyrone Gaston (2-for-4, 2 runs) compiled three RBI and Eron Evans tacked on three runs for visiting Seton in the second game of the Catholic League Red doubleheader.
Lincoln-Way East 4, Young 2: Alana Selvaggio, Jenny Van Geertry and Blake Ruiz contributed RBI singles during a four-run third inning for host Lincoln-Way East (14-5). Nikole Van Gennep pitched six shutout innings in relief for the Griffins, scattering five hits and striking out 10.
Lemont 11, Lincoln-Way Central 0: Lauren Young spun a two-hitter to propel host Lemont (14-6) in the five-inning game. Anna Smagacz (3-for-3, 2 runs) and Kayla Irwin (2-for-3, 2 runs) smashed two-run doubles for the Indians and Maddy Vermejan clubbed a solo homer. Ashley Evans recorded a single for Lincoln-Way Central (12-8).
Oak Forest 5, Mother McAuley 3: Taylor Ahlgrim (2-for-4) put up two runs and an RBI for visiting Oak Forest (16-4). Mother McAuley slipped to 13-4.
Illiana Christian 4, Chicago Christian 2: Brooke VanderAa (4-hitter, 5 strikeouts) pitched a complete game and Jess Bombino hit a solo homer to lift host Illiana Christian (11-11). Davina Gutierrez swatted an RBI double for Chicago Christian (7-10).
Evergreen Park 6-20, Queen of Peace 4-14: Abby Langevin (3-for-4) had three RBI and Maddie Vojacek (2 earned runs) went the distance to elevate visiting Evergreen Park (14-8) in Game 1. Erin Jones went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI for Queen of Peace (3-13). Caroline Andrade (3-for-6, 3 runs) led the victorious Mustangs in Game 2, bashing a three-run homer and totaling five RBI. Abigail Bennett (3-for-5, 5 RBI) smashed a grand slam for Queen of Peace.
Marian Catholic 12-8, Fenwick 5-1: Susie Baranski went a combined 6-for-8 with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI for visiting Marian Catholic (11-7, 7-3) in the ESCC. Allison Spence pitched a complete game in the opener for the Spartans in addition to contributing two doubles, two runs and two RBI. Haley Earl starred on the mound (5-hitter, 6 strikeouts) and at the plate for the winners in Game 2.
Providence 4-17, Nazareth 2-8: Morgan Greenwood (3-for-5, 2 runs) clubbed two homers and totaled four RBI in helping Providence (11-8, 5-5) capture both ends of the ESCC doubleheader. Zoe Bruni (2-for-5, 4 RBI) added a three-run homer for the host Celtics and Jessica Cothern (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBI) had a solo shot. Kendal Judge pitched a three-hitter and struck out 14 in setting the tone for Providence in Game 2. Cothern posted two RBI and Courtney Pych scored two runs.
Beecher 3-4, New Trier 2-14: Taylor Johnson’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth powered Beecher (21-6) in the opener. Sarah Crews surrendered six hits in tossing a complete game for the Bobcats.
Lockport 1, Plainfield East 0: Sarah DeMasi scored on Ally Howard’s eighth-inning single to give Lockport (15-5-1) a sweep. Kalyn Putman threw a five-hitter and struck out eight for the Porters.
Lockport 4, Lake Park 2: Kelly Pattison’s two-run homer in the eighth inning won it for Lockport. Justine Cielenski (6 strikeouts) allowed one earned run on six hits in pitching a complete game for the Porters.
Plainfield Central 3, Andrew 1: Kayla Noel contributed an RBI grounder for Andrew (16-6) in the championship.
Andrew 12, Fenton 1: Cassie Hoppenrath (4-hitter, 7 strikeouts) went the distance and Kayla Plastiak smashed a two-run homer to lead Andrew in the second round.
Andrew 8, Marengo 7: Plastiak went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for Andrew in the nine-inning opener.
Providence 3, Marian Catholic 0: Alyssa Dorning contributed two goals and an assist to lead host Providence (10-7-2, 3-5) in the East Suburban Catholic. Nicki Griffith posted her seventh shutout.
Brine Tournament of Champions
Lockport 1, Homewood-Flossmoor 0: Taylor Stortz (goal) and Cassidy Hensen (5th shutout) were the standouts for Lockport (6-6-4) in Burlington, Iowa.
Homewood-Flossmoor 2, Peoria Christian 0: Goals by Lauren Hurley and Rachael Kirchschlager propelled Homewood-Flossmoor (6-11).
Latin Invitational: Illiana Christian (7-9-1) finished third after outlasting Nazareth 25-15, 22-25, 15-9. Trevor Dekker had 80 assists over five matches for the Vikings and Denny Murrin added a team-high 32 kills.
Brother Rice Invitational: De La Salle’s Steve Hill won the crown at No. 1 singles by defeating St. Ignatius’ Crofton Kelly 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Despite the loss, St. Ignatius (76 points) captured top honors in the eight-team field. Lockport (39) was second, followed by De La Salle (30), Marist (27) and Shepard (25).
Lincoln-Way East Invitational: Marian Catholic’s Kyle Scheffers bested Rockford Auburn’s Tytus Metzler 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles final. Lemont’s Nathaniel Burner advanced to the championship at No. 2 singles, where he dropped 6-3, 6-1 decision to Kendrick Chong of Jacobs. Lincoln-Way East Black (40) led all area teams with a second-place finish behind York (46). The Griffins produced the runners-up at No. 1 doubles (Tom Emola and Jarek Jozwik) and No. 2 doubles (Colin Walsh and Connor VanderGenugten). Jacobs (34), Hinsdale South (32) and Marian Catholic (31) rounded out the top five in 24-team field.
Boys Water Polo
St. Charles North Invitational: Chuck Henrichs put in 17 goals in leading St. Rita past Vernon Hills 20-13 and Young 14-11. Eric Johnson added nine goals for the Mustangs, who lost to Hersey 12-11.
Girls Water Polo
Rockford (Mich.) Invitational: Liz Klock scored twice and Sabrina Migliorini made 13 saves to guide Lincoln-Way Central over East Grand Rapids (Mich.) 4-3. The Knights lost their other two matches to Michigan schools Okemos 14-6 and Hudsonville 5-1.
Girls Track & Field
Palatine Invitational: Second-place performances from Grace Foley in the 2-mile run (11:37.36) and Rayphina Foma’i in the shot put (36 feet, 7 inches) guided Sandburg (58) to fifth place in the 12-team meet won by Palatine (160).
Elgin 12, Joliet Junior College 10: Ron Sessler clubbed a three-run double and Ben Kirchler (3-for-5, run) had two RBI to lead host Joliet Junior College (35-17). Colten Trager, Nick Fleischauer and Steve Wittkamp added two runs apiece for the Wolves.
South Suburban 10-12, Milwaukee Tech 5-7: Steve Letz (3-for-5, 3 runs) provided a two-run single and a two-run homer as visiting South Suburban (31-16) completed the sweep. Nick Kellams (4-for-4, 2 runs) posted three RBI for the Bulldogs in Game 1 and Cody Moskovski (4-for-5) added three runs.
Lewis 7-9, Bellarmine 4-8: Kyle Kapka (2-for-3) garnered three RBI and Austin Mastela (2-for-3) scored three runs to elevate host Lewis (25-22, 10-23) in the opener of the Great Lakes Valley doubleheader. Eann Cox (6-4) tossed a five-hitter in going the distance for the Flyers in the nine-inning game. Ben Albano (3-for-3, 3 runs) drilled a three-run homer in Game 2 for Lewis, which survived a five-run rally by Bellarmine in the seventh and final inning.
St. Francis 7, Olivet Nazarene 3: Matt Scott (3-for-5) had two RBI and David Kuhne (2-for-4, RBI) added two runs to steer St. Francis (35-18) in the opening round at Judson.
St. Xavier 6, Trinity Christian 5: Alec Barnhart and Bryan Polak delivered RBI singles in the top of the 13th inning to spark St. Xavier (22-27) in the opening round at Judson. Dan Wetzel (4-7) pitched five innings in relief for the Cougars, allowing one earned run on three hits. Joe McCaw had a game-tying double in the 10th for Trinity Christian (25-19) and also scored in the 13th. Steve Brewer tacked on two hits and two RBI for the Trolls, but was left stranded at second base in the last inning as Wetzel retired the next two batters.
Men’s Track & Field
CCAC Championships: St. Francis (152) finished second behind host Olivet Nazarene (287). The Saints were led by Ryan Njegovan, who set meet records in winning the shot put (52-7½) and discus (173-6). St. Francis also received victories from Brandon Carson in the 5,000-meter run (15:22.50) and the foursome in the 400-meter relay (43.63). Dan Spencer won the 110 hurdles (16.83) in guiding St. Xavier (106) to third place. Trinity Christian (61) came in fourth as Andy Riedsma captured top honors in the 1,500 meters (4:00.5).
Great Lakes Valley Championships: Matt Jemilo won the 800 (1:54.51) and Jared Harkness prevailed in the javelin (172-2) as host Lewis (116) finished third. Missouri S&T (172) was first and Indianapolis second (124) among the 12 scoring teams.
St. Xavier 9, St. Francis 1: Nicole Nonnemacher (2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI) stroked a two-run single and Amanda Hainlen chipped in a two-run double in helping host St. Xavier (44-6-1) advance to the title round. Megan Nonnemacher (22-2) scattered five hits in going the distance for the Cougars in the five-inning tilt. Jessica Kuester contributed an RBI single for St. Francis (22-20).
Calumet 4, Trinity Christian 1: Tori Grzincic hit a sacrifice fly to aid Trinity Christian (24-25) in the championship bracket at St. Xavier. Mattie McGuire (8-9) yielded two earned runs and struck out five in going the route for the Trolls.
Olivet Nazarene 3, St. Xavier 2: Katie Megyesi’s two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh lifted Olivet Nazarene (45-2-1). Amanda Hainlen contributed an RBI single for host St. Xavier and Megan James added a run-scoring grounder. Nicole Nonnemacher (19-4) allowed three earned runs on nine hits in pitching a complete game for the Cougars.
St. Francis 12, Calumet 4: Kiley Southall (5-for-5) posted four runs and Tori Johnson (3-for-5, 2 runs) added four RBI to boost St. Francis. Caitlyn Balandis allowed three earned runs on five hits in tossing a complete game for the Saints at St. Xavier.
Women’s Track & Field
CCAC Championships: Daryll Rodriguez won the 100 hurdles (15.79) and 400 hurdles (1:03.71) — establishing a meet record in the latter event — as St. Francis (176) finished second to host Olivet Nazarene. The Saints also received record-setting efforts from Hilary Halford in the 5,000 meters (17:50.74) and Isi Edeko in the triple jump (11.59 meters). Ashley Jourdan, Brooke Hamilton, Emily Dykstra and Courtney Kalous won the mile relay (4:05.25) for Trinity Christian (88), which finished fourth. St. Xavier (22) was seventh in the nine-team field.
Great Lakes Valley Championships: Host Lewis produced 10 champions and totaled 197 points in winning its first outdoor conference title in 11 years. Megan Marchildon won the pentathlon (4,772) for the second year in a row and also contributed to victories in the 400 relay (47.27) and mile relay (3:50.37). Chantel Stennis ran in the 400 relay in addition to posting the top times in the 100 (11.90) and 200 (24.58). Indianapolis (156) was second and Truman State (96) third in the 12-team meet.
