1. Austin Royer had a good weekend. The Lincoln-Way East setter officially signed with St. Ambrose on Saturday morning. A few hours later, he earned MVP honors at East’s 24-team tournament, leading the Griffins to the title over Lincoln-Way North. Royer headlined the 16-person All-Tournament team with teammate Nate Van Dellen, Sandburg’s Paul Chmura and Neil Naughton, Lincoln-Way West’s Michael Wexter and Lincoln-Way North’s Jake Walenga. Only Walenga and Lyons’ Harvard-bound Marko Kostich earned repeat selections.
2. Sandburg’s Neil Naughton is standing out. Sandburg’s 6-foot-7 middle hitter had a heck of a tournament, posting double-digit kills in every match. Sandburg coach Sean Airola said Naughton “was a stud all weekend.” The senior helped Sandburg avenge a pair of defeats to defending state champ Downers Grove South in the quarterfinals. The Eagles then lost to Lincoln-Way North in three sets but regrouped to beat Lake Park for third.
3. Sectional seeding is on the way. Southland coaches submit their ballots this week, with the results coming out Friday. Lincoln-Way East is poised to grab the Marist Sectional’s No. 1 slot. Brother Rice and Lincoln-Way North should be next in line. It will be interesting to see where the top teams in the South Suburban Conference — Oak Forest, Richards and Eisenhower — are placed. Marist also has a few big wins.
