Brandon Mendoza’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh gave No. 5 seed St. Francis a 3-2 upset win over host Gwinnett College on Monday night in the NAIA Opening Round playoffs.
It was the second victory of the day for the Saints, who moved into the championship bracket in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Gwinnett, the top-seed, led 2-1 until St. Francis (38-20) rallied in the seventh. David Kuhne doubled to score Luke Wyss with the tying run. After a sacrifice bunt moved Kuhne to third, Mendoza hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kuhne.
Jacob Butler pitched all nine innings for St. Francis, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.
The Saints started the day with a 2-1 win over Westmont College, as Matt Scott’s pinch-hit single scored Mendoza with the winning run in the top of the eighth.
Adam Panayotovich (9-4) went the route in the nine-inning contest. He surrendered one earned run on seven hits and struck out seven.
St. Francis plays at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday against Southeastern, with the winner moving on to the championship Wednesday.
