Softball: Three things learned

Updated: May 14, 2014 7:00PM

These girls are tough. A sacrifice fly and an errant throw led to a ferocious collision at the plate Tuesday between Shepard’s Jalyn Stepney and Richards catcher Molly Pohrebny. The crash resulted in an entanglement of legs after which they were temporarily writhing on the ground in pain. Both needed only a few minutes to shake it off, however, and after a handshake at the plate continued on.

Annalise Scott strikes with her bat, too. Much has been made of the Tinley Park sophomore’s prowess in the circle. But she’s also one of the Titans’ biggest offensive threats. Saturday she augmented her lights-out pitching by contributing to a 7-0 victory over Oak Forest with two hits and two RBI. For the season, she’s hitting .528 with two home runs and 19 RBI.

Beecher is stepping up. Kevin Hayhurst always challenges his Bobcats with a late-season series of games against Class 3A and 4A squads to get them ready for the Class 2A playoffs. This year brought victories over Oak Forest (10-0), Marian Catholic (6-4), Sandburg (9-8), Oak Lawn (13-3) and New Trier (3-2). Look for a deep postseason run.
