Boys Water Polo Note for May 19, 2014

Updated: June 23, 2014 1:10PM

One of the big reasons Andrew was able to put together the best season in program history, finishing 26-4 and advancing to the Lincoln-Way Central Sectional championship before falling 12-10 Saturday to Sandburg, was the T-bolts’ balance.

There seemingly was a new player stepping up for Andrew every game.

“You look at the scoring report to try to scout us and you see Andrew Wojdyla six goals one game, Alex Gacek five this game, Kyle Fitzgerald — a first-year player — stepping up big,” Andrew coach Kris Kowal said. “The guys played together as a team. It wasn’t just one or two guys doing everything for us.”

In the end, Sandburg and coach Jim Caliendo had just enough to end the T-bolts’ dream run.

“Coach Caliendo is a great coach,” Kowal said. “He knows how to make adjustments. It’s a chess match when you play him, and he’s a master. Sometimes he makes people look like they’re playing checkers.”
