Baseball: Three things learned

1. Brian Musielak is crafty. The Brother Rice senior right-hander won’t wow anyone with a blazing fastball or jaw-dropping breaking stuff. But the young man knows how to pitch, effectively mixing an 80-mph fastball and quality off-speed stuff. Most impressive is Musielak’s willingness to throw his changeup at any point in the count, often fooling hitters looking fastball. He tossed a three-hit shutout Saturday during a win over St. Laurence.

2. Share and share alike. It certainly wasn’t the way either had envisioned, but St. Rita coach Mike Zunica and St. Laurence coach Pete Lotus gladly will accept a share of the vaunted Catholic League Blue championship. The Mustangs and Vikings both lost Saturday, finishing 13-3 and tied atop the League. That probably is appropriate. It was fairly evident during conference play that St. Rita and St. Laurence were the top teams in the Blue, making the co-championship fitting.

3. Jesse Forestell is heating up. The Homewood-Flossmoor junior catcher started slowly, but as the weather’s heated up, so has his bat. He went 4-for-7 with four RBI last week and had two more hits and an RBI Monday in a 3-1 loss to Joliet Catholic. He leads the Vikings with a .389 average.
