With a 22-0 lead after two innings, Chicago Christian conceded its final three innings of at-bats before the slaughter rule kicked in Saturday afternoon against ACE Tech.
Christian Bolhuis fired five strikeouts in two innings to break the program’s single-season strikeout record and the host Knights cruised to a 22-0 victory to win the regional championship.
Bolhuis has 97 strikeouts on the season despite pitching just 58 innings. He needed just 21 pitches Saturday for the win.
“He’s been our horse all year,” Knights coach Eric Brauer said. “The only reason he hasn’t thrown more is because we use him once a week in our Monday conference game, so he’s taken the mound against all the No. 1s in our conference.”
Bolhuis, who’s 8-2 and has an ERA under 1.00, aided his cause with a pair of bases-loaded walks.
“It was a goal at the beginning of the season to get to 100 strikeouts,” Bolhuis said. “I’m not there yet, but hopefully I’ll get to it next week after we win (the sectional semifinal).”
Chicago Christian (25-11-1) is slated to meet Ottawa Marquette at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Herscher Sectional.
“We’ve been working toward Wednesday for a while now,” Brauer said. “We’re 11-1 in our last 12 games, so we’ve been playing some good ball down the stretch.”
Ron Clark blasted a home run and a double for the Knights, reaching base and scoring in all four of his at-bats. Max Kerfin added a two-run double and Patrick McCarthy had a two-run single for Chicago Christian, which sent 17 batters to the plate in the first inning.
ACE Tech (2-9) got a hit from Tyler Burrell and a walk and stolen base from Gerald Spivey.
