Softball: Richards batters Hinsdale South

When a coach has racked up more than 600 wins, as Richards coach Julie Folliard has done, one of the lessons learned is to not take a first-round playoff opponent for granted.

Folliard didn’t fool around with Hinsdale South on Tuesday in the Class 4A Hinsdale South Regional. She started her No. 1 pitcher, eventually rotating three, and subsequently having to go back to her No. 2.

In the end, the Bulldogs pulled off a 10-5 win and advanced to Saturday’s regional final opposite either Shepard or Eisenhower.

Hinsdale South closed at 3-26.

“We know (Hinsdale South) has good hitters and they showed that,” Folliard said. “We had to be selective with our pitches and we were careful. Whoever we play on Saturday we have to play our best.”

Designated player Sara Kiziak played her best, pounding out four singles and scoring an equal amount of times. The Bulldogs finished with 14 hits against Hornets pitcher MacKenzie Kern. Hailey Czerwinski (RBI) added three hits while Jordan Battels, Emily Wetzel and Molly Pohrebny (double, 2 RBI) each had two hits.

Wetzel hit her 11th home run of the season in the first inning, a three-run no-doubter to left to give her team a 3-0 lead.

“As a team we needed to put our best effort and come out strong,” Kiziak said.

The Bulldogs (21-8) added three more in the third, another in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Andrea Stengle (16-6) got the win, giving up two runs and striking out five. She was relieved by Sara Tobin in the fifth, who went two innings. Stengle came back in to record the last two outs in the seventh.

Maddie Little (2-for-3, 2 RBI) just brought up from the JV, hit her first career varsity home run in the second. Holli Jones (2-for-4) added her second career homer in the fourth.
