One high-scoring sequence was all Oak Lawn needed to separate itself from Young for a 6-4 victory Thursday in a Class 4A Mount Carmel Regional semifinal.
In the fourth inning, with the game tied at 2, Oak Lawn loaded the bases with no outs on singles by Ryne Melmk, Matt Witkowski and Bobby Beard.
A walk forced in a run for a 3-2 Spartans lead. Justin Swatek tacked on two more runs with a double. The Spartans went up 6-2 on a double by Joe Dodaro.
“It was a key inning, because we ended up with six runs in the game to set the tone,” Swatek said. “It was a great feeling. Hitting is contagious. It takes more pressure off you.”
The Spartans (13-22-1) will play top seed Mount Carmel at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional title.
“Our goal all year has been to get to a regional championship and win a regional championship. We are one step closer,” Spartans coach William Gerny said. “I’m excited, because they have had a tough year.”
Young closes at 23-11.
“We ran ourselves out of a couple of innings not doing stuff,” Young coach Chris Cassidy said. “We gave them a few runs, and they took advantage of the couple of mistakes we made.”
