Baseball: Lemont KOs Illiana Christian

Updated: June 5, 2014 10:40PM

Danny Dowiarz batted No. 9 in Lemont’s order for nearly the entire season.

A late hitting surge, however, prompted coach Brian Storako to move Dowiarz into the leadoff spot for Thursday’s Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Sectional semifinal against Illiana Christian.

Dowiarz continued his hot streak, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs as the Indians downed Illiana Christian 7-1.

Lemont (31-5) advances to play either Manteno (23-13-2) at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lincoln-Way West for the sectional championship. Illiana Christian goes home at 18-16.

“There was a little pressure, obviously, being a sectional game,” Dowiarz said. “But I held it together. I can’t really complain about a .750 average. I just went out there and hit the ball. That’s my job.”

The Indians received four innings of one-hit ball from starter Charlie Wright (4 strikeouts). Garrett Acton came to the mound in relief and was just as efficient, striking out five and allowing one hit.

Wright and Acton both kept an excellent pace.

“We talk about that,” Storako said of the quick delivery. “We don’t want to make the other team comfortable. When you’re throwing strikes, you can work at that pace.”

Illiana Christian’s Caleb Jonkman took the loss, allowing four runs and striking out three over 51/3 innings. Three of Lemont’s runs were unearned.

“Every error and every dropped ball we had, they scored a run,” Illiana Christian coach Dan Gibson said. “We didn’t play as well as we could have, but they’re a very good team. Each of their batters made our pitchers work.”

Lemont had 11 hits and scored in five different innings.

Matt Monaco and Dowiarz had RBI in the second inning. Nick Wisz (2-for-4) sparked a two-run sixth when he knocked in Dowiarz and Mike Papierski with a single.

Illiana Christian scratched a run across in the fourth when Jack Hillegonds knocked in Joseph Skrbina, who reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jonkman.
