SouthtownStar 2014 All-Area Boys Water Polo Team

ZACK AMENDOLA Stagg, Jr., Hole

The Illinois Water Polo third-team All-State selection was one of the area’s most explosive players, finishing with 95 goals, 56 assists and 72 steals. He was a two-time All-SouthWest Suburban Red performer for the Chargers.

MATT BACHLER Brother Rice, Jr., Driver/Defensive Hole

The third-team All-State pick scored a team-high 67 goals in leading the Crusaders to the Stagg Sectional title as the four seed, earning a trip to state. He also was a force on defense.

ANGELO ESPINOZA De La Salle, Sr., Driver

Earned honorable mention All-State honors while leading the Meteors to the championship of the St. Ignatius Sectional. A strong performer on both sides of the ball, Espinoza helped De La Salle finish a program-best 19-12.

TRISTAN FUNK Lincoln-Way Central, Sr., Hole

The all-sectional pick was a big part of making Lincoln-Way Central the area’s most improved team. He finished with 79 goals and 57 steals and displayed a wide variety of offensive moves.

CHUCK HENRICHS St. Rita, Sr., Driver

The all-sectional and all-Metro Catholic Aquatics Conference honoree finished with 51 goals, 38 steals, 21 assists and drew 18 ejections. Led a much-improved St. Rita squad to a 15-15 record and a sectional semifinal berth.

JAKOBI MCCLELLAN Homewood-Flossmoor, Sr., Goalie

The second-team All-State selection was a one-man show for the H-F defense, recording 402 saves in 31 games (13 per game). H-F coach Tim Caldwell said, “He was our defense, period,” of the two-time All-Area selection.

SEAN MCNICHOLAS Sandburg, Sr., Goalie

The honorable mention All-State pick was a key part of Sandburg’s run to state. Made 329 saves in 33 games (10 per game) while allowing just 6.7 goals per game.

ZACH ROPER Sandburg, Sr., Hole

The SouthtownStar 2014 Boys Water Polo Player of the Year poured in 171 goals, dished out 67 assists and led the Eagles in steals with 136. The second-team All-State selection who led Sandburg to state.

SHAMUS SHIELDS Lincoln-Way North, Sr., Goalie

In a terrific year for area goalies, Shields was up there with the best. The all-sectional pick set a school record with 446 saves in 30 games (14.9 per game) and allowed just 7.4 goals per game.

JAKE SPEECHLEY Lockport, Sr., Driver

A key factor in Lockport’s success the past three seasons, Speechley earned all-sectional and all-SouthWest Suburban Blue honors. In leading a balanced Porters attack, he scored 67 goals and added 23 assists.

ERIC TAMULONIS Andrew, Sr., Hole

Andrew’s team MVP led the T-bolts to a 26-4 record, their best season ever. The All-State honorable mention selection scored 98 goals and recorded 66 steals. He scored on 63 percent of his shots.

MIKE TAMULONIS Andrew, Sr., Defensive Hole

Along with Eric and Anna, one of Tamulonis triplets who all earned All-Area honors. The all-sectional selection led the T-bolts defense, consistently matching up against the opponents’ best scorer and coming up with 62 steals.

BROC THOMPSON Homewood-Flossmoor, Sr. Hole

One of the most improved players in the area, he finished with 113 goals — 73 more than he scored last season. The all-sectional selection also was a force defensively, making 65 steals.

MITCH ZIELER Sandburg, Jr., Utility

One of the area’s breakout stars, Zieler scored 93 goals and dished out 60 assists to help the Eagles get to state. The all-sectional selection came up huge in sectional final win over Andrew, scoring four times.
