SouthtownStar 2014 All-Area Girls Water Polo Team

NIKI BERINGER
Lincoln-Way North, Sr., Hole

The all-sectional honoree became the Phoenix’s go-to scorer and delivered 87 goals. Also had 34 steals. The all-SouthWest Suburban Red pick will swim at Eastern Illinois in the fall.

CLARE BRYAR
Mother McAuley, Sr., Hole

The Illinois Water Polo first-team All-State selection played for four state-qualifying teams, including this year’s fourth-place squad. A three-time All-Area choice, Bryar finished the season with 108 goals — 14 in three games at state — and 30 assists.

JILL CONNOLLY
Lincoln-Way East, Sr., Goalie

She allowed just 4.8 goals per game in anchoring one of the state’s best defenses. The honorable mention All-State choice led the Griffins to their first state appearance since 2009.

SARAH DOLITSKY
Sandburg, Jr., Hole

The Breakout star did it all for the Eagles, finishing with 128 goals, 102 steals and 62 assists. She earned third-team All-State honors and became a valuable leader for a 21-10 squad that shared the SouthWest Suburban Blue title.

MISTY GARDNER
Richards co-op, Sr., Hole

Gardner poured in 149 goals in just 26 games, including a strong performance in the Stagg Sectional, scoring 13 times in just two games, nine in a quarterfinal win over Stagg. She was an all-sectional selection.

MEGAN HOFER
Andrew, Sr., Driver

She set school records for goals in a season (126), assists in a season (69) and career goals (291). Also had 76 steals this season. The third-team All-State pick and two-time All-Area selection led T-bolts to program best 23-6 record.

LIZ KLOCK
Lincoln-Way Central, Sr., Driver

A major factor in the Knights’ success the past three seasons, Klock scored 94 goals and dished out 35 assists this year. Will play water polo at Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania.

HALEY MCCABE
Lincoln-Way East, Sr.,
Driver/Defensive Hole

The all-sectional and two-time All-Area selection scored 76 goals during the Griffins’ run to state. Also a key defender who had 42 steals. She scored 129 goals over her final two seasons despite her defensive responsibilities.

MARY JUNE O’CONNELL
Mother McAuley, Sr., Driver

The four-year varsity performer earned third-team All-State honors. She had a team-best 43 assists, added 20 goals and was known as a lockdown defender for a Mighty Macs squad that finished fourth in the state.

STEFFY PAPPAS
Sandburg, Jr., Defensive Hole

Pappas, a strong all-around player, totaled 46 goals, 45 assists and 45 steals. Despite being undersized, she matched up well with opponents’ top scorers. She earned all-sectional accolades.

HANNAH SCHULTZ
Bremen co-op, Sr., Hole

The SouthtownStar 2014 Player of the Year and second-team All-State selection completed a brilliant four-year varsity career by scoring a state-best 156 goals, accounting for 78 percent of her team’s scoring. She’s a three-time All-Area honoree.

ANNA TAMULONIS
Andrew, Sr., Goalie

One of the toughest goalies in the state to score on, she allowed just 3.5 goals per game. The all-sectional selection made 223 saves and became program’s all-time leader for career saves.

GENA TANQUILUT
Lincoln-Way West, Sr., Driver

A strong defender who was also capable of big scoring outbursts, she finished with 73 steals and 45 goals. The all-sectional selection helped an improved Warriors squad end the season with a 13-13 record.

FRAN WILLIAMSON
Mother McAuley, Sr.,
Driver/Defensive Hole

The second-team All-State performer scored 103 goals, had 24 assists and was one of the state’s best defenders. The four-year varsity player often was counted on to shut down the opponents’ top scorer.
