GLENVIEW — Never count out the cagey veterans, at least not after just one round of the Illinois Open.

Medinah Country Club pro Travis Johns and University of Illinois golf coach Mike Small got back into the hunt Tuesday by shooting the best rounds of the day at The Glen Club. Each shot 6-under-par 66.

Johns, the 36-year-old Australian native who lives in Oswego, opened with even par 72 on Monday. His total of 6-under 138 leaves the long-hitting left-hander a stroke behind leader Brian Bullington heading into Wednesday’s final 18 holes.

An amateur from Frankfort, Bullington followed his opening 2-under 70 with as 5-under 67 to move to 7-under 137. He had three bogeys and eight birdies during Tuesday’s round.

Johns had five birdies, one bogey and an eagle.

Small, a four-time winner of the event who had opened with a 5-over 77, had seven birdies and one bogey and is tied for ninth place at 1-under, 143.

The cut for the top 50 and ties from the original field of 156 was set at 5-over 149. Fifty seven golfers made it.

Three players — Bloomignton’s Kyle English, Roselle’s Daniel Stringfellow and Lake Forest’s Brad Hopfinger — trail Johns by a stroke and are tied for third at 5-under 139 for the tournament.

First-day leader Michael Davan, of Hoopeston, followed an opening 66 with a 76, leaving him tied for seventh at 2-under 142.

Defending champ Joe Kinney, of Antioch, is tied for ninth at 1-under 143 following rounds of 71 and 72.

Other Southland golfers making the cut were Brian Payne, of Flossmoor, at even-par 144 and Lockport’s Ryan Frederick at 149.
