Glenn Przybylski looked to be in championship form Saturday, shooting the best round of the day as he opened defense of his title at the Naperville Men’s City Golf Championship.
Przybylski, of Frankfort, fired a 3-under-par 69 at Naperbrook Golf Course and holds a one-stroke lead over three players as the 133-man field moves to Springbrook Golf Course for Sunday’s final round in the 36-hole event.
“I like these golf courses, especially Springbrook,” the 47-year-old Przybylski said. “It’s a really good test.”
Nick Corban, Jack Hawes and Craig Martin are tied for second at 2-under par 70. Matt Shipley holds fifth place after shooting even par 72, and three players — Jason Roach, Joseph Fritz and Erik Anderson — are tied for sixth at 1-over 73.
“I played really well on the front nine,” Przybylski said. “I birdied four of the first six holes and was hitting my wedges really close.
“On the back nine I didn’t play as well and had a couple of three putts (which led to two of his three bogeys on the back nine.) The other (bogey) came on one of the par 3s when I didn’t get up and down.”
Przybylski shot 73-72—145 last year to edge Cody Sundburg by one stroke. Ryan Miller (147) and Dave Cooke (148) rounded out the top four, but all three of those players are not playing this year.
Corban, a senior on the golf team at NCAA Division II Wisconsin-Parkside, was one of five players who tied for fifth in the event last year.
“This is my third year in this tournament and it’s one of my favorites of the summer,” said Corban, a Plainfield North High School graduate. “I just have fun here. This is a great course, and it’s in nice shape.”
