After a 1-hour, 15-minute lightning delay with 6:10 left in the first quarter and no score, Morgan Park and Thornton resumed play at Gately Stadium.

“Our field isn’t even lined yet so we would not have been able to move it to our place on Saturday,” Thornton coach Bill Mosel said. “I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have given up their home-field advantage anyway.”

A 36-yard pass from reserve quarterback Leslie Wilson to Brian Wilson was the difference in a 26-13 Thornton win.

Wilson had just entered for starter Michael Fuller (11 carries, 57 yards, 2 touchdowns; 5-for-10 passing, 44 yards), who was injured for the second time in the game. The score came with 2:26 left in the game.

The Wildcats (1-0), who didn’t make the playoffs last season, added a 30-yard touchdown run by Tionte McDaniel after holding the Mustangs on the ensuing drive.

The Mustangs (0-1) were forced to bring up several junior varsity players because the eligibility paperwork for some 20 players was not processed.

“We had most of our offensive skill players, but our defensive backfield and our line were hit hard by this,” Morgan Park coach Terry Atkins said.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats struck first on a 5-yard run by Fuller, who went out later in the quarter with an injury. He was replaced by Wilson until Fuller re-entered in the third quarter.

The Wildcats maintained a 6-0 lead at the half after a goal-line stand in the final seconds.

The Mustangs answered with 4:49 left in the third quarter on a 39-yard run by William James (12 carries, 122 yards, 2 TDs) and the score was tied 6-6 after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Another Fuller touchdown put the Wildcats up 12-6 with 10:08 left in the fourth quarter.

Armani Lewis had a fumble recovery and an interception for the Wildcats, while Myron Riley added an interception.

Michael Hawthorne had an interception for Morgan Park.
