Football: St. Rita turns up the heat against Friars

Updated: November 9, 2011 12:00PM

No. 5 St. Rita invited Fenwick to its home opener and then treated the Friars rather rudely, winning 42-0 in the Catholic League crossover Friday night.

Running back Guerby Minister fumbled on St. Rita’s first possession but redeemed himself by scoring the next two touchdowns for the Mustangs on runs of 3 and 1 yard as St. Rita took a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, St. Rita took all the fight out of the visitors after being pinned on the 1-yard line after a punt. Quarterback Scott Thomas drove the Mustangs 99 yards in 13 plays, connecting with wide receiver Kenny Gallady for an 18-yard touchdown pass with one second remaining in the half to put St. Rita ahead 21-0.

Thomas threw two more touchdown passes in the second half, a 42-yard strike to T.J. Verdum and a 31-yarder to Gallady.

Thomas finished 9-for-11 for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

The Mustangs scored late in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard run by Tim Lombard.

“I think everybody played well,” St. Rita coach Todd Kuska said. “We put together four good quarters. We had some miscues but the defense did a great job.”
