SouthtownStar Athletes on Campus: Moesle named Augustana’s MVP

Junior midfielder Taylor Moesle (Sandburg) was chosen the Offensive MVP of Augustana College’s women’s soccer team for the 2011 season.

Moesle was the leading scorer for the Vikings with seven goals and eight assists (22 points). Two of her goals were game-winners as Augustana outscored its opponents 40-20 on the season.

Moesle’s eight assists tie her for second on the single-season list. At the conclusion of her junior season, the Orland Park resident is on the career top-10 list for goals (28, tied for seventh), assists (17, tied for third), and points (73, fifth).

Moesle was selected as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18, as well as being selected to the All-CCIW team.

Augustana finished the season 11-8-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the CCIW, tying the Vikings for fourth place.

Also earning a letter on Augustana’s women’s soccer team was senior midfielder Kelly Johnson (Homewood-Flossmoor), who concluded her playing career with four letters.

Being a good sport

Dominican University freshman women’s tennis player Marbeya Berner was one of six athletes named to the All-Northern Athletics Conference All-Sportsmanship Team for the 2011 season.

Berner, who prepped at Lincoln-Way West, was 11-1 overall and 11-0 in the NAC while playing No. 6 singles for the Stars. The New Lenox native won her final eight matches of the season.

Definitely Darius

Prairie State College basketball player Darius White (Tinley Park High School) was selected both the National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV and Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 13.

In two games during the course of the week, the sophomore forward totaled 31 points and 13 rebounds while blocking two shots.

The Matteson resident recorded a week-high 17-points Nov. 12 against the College of DuPage and 14 on Nov. 8 against Joliet Junior College. The Pioneers lost to the College of DuPage 60-52 while suffering a 78-52 setback to Joliet Junior College.
