When Sandburg’s Stan Grotkiewicz first started swimming, he never thought he’d have to worry about his hair. But like many teams, the Eagles have their own hairy traditions.

“Not expecting that (getting into) swimming, but it’s a fun team thing,” Grotkiewicz said.

Through the first month of the season the chlorine in pools fades any hair color, but that’s just the start.

“We don’t dye our hair until January or February,” Grotkiewicz said. “At the end of the year, we all bleach our hair. All the guys going to sectionals dye it black, then shave it for state. Other guys dye it blue or some crazy color.”

Sandburg continues to roll, beating Lincoln-Way East 123-63 on Jan. 5 to improve to 5-0 in duals.
