Michael Cardoso

School: Lincoln-Way East

Sport: Swimming

Year: Senior

Before he chose swimming, Cardoso gave all the sports a shot growing up.

“I tried every sport there was for at least a week before finally I got to swimming and found something I really loved to do,” he said. “I’ve been doing it since I was 5.”

He has come to appreciate how the sport can bring teammates together.

“There’s a lot of team bonding, even as a little kid, and even more so when you’re stuck with each other for 3 1/2 months.”

Kyle Sinwelski

School: Oak Forest

Sport: Bowling

Year: Senior

Sinwelski, who was just two pins shy of qualifying for the state championships as an individual last season, is a bit inexperienced when compared with the area’s other top bowlers.

“I’ve been bowling seriously since the end of freshman year,” he said. “Over that short amount of time, I think I made good use of it.”

There’s still room for improvement, though.

“I’ve been trying to improve my footwork mainly,” he said.

Megan Szczepanski

School: Lockport

Sport: Bowling

Year: Junior

Szczepanski, who emerged as one of the Porters’ top bowlers last season, has some big stats in mind this season.

“I want to beat my high (three-game) series of 736 and my high six-game series of 1,422,” she said. “I want to maintain an average over 200 and I want to be 90 percent on my spares in competition.”

The junior, who plays the clarinet in the school band, has been bowling since she was 3. “It’s like my escape,” she said.

Catherine Roman

School: Tinley Park

Sport: Cheerleading

Year: Senior

While Roman enjoys some of the perks of being a senior captain, she insists the Titans are working hard to bring a third cheerleading state title back to Tinley Park after a four-year dry spell.

“This is coach (Arianne) Montgomery’s first year, and everybody really likes her,” Roman said. “Our team is working hard and seems to be taking things more seriously.”
