Angelica Lafemina, a junior, has qualified for the state meet in each of her three seasons for Tinley Park track and field.
This month, she won her first sectional title in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 21.06 seconds).
As a sophomore, Lafemina was sixth in state in the 400 (58.49 seconds).
When did you realize you were fast?
I used to smoke the boys running around the neighborhood as a kid. I’ve always been pretty fast.
You qualified for state in the 400 the past few years, but this season you qualified in the 800. What are your thoughts on the change?
It was a great feeling to win conference and sectionals in the 800, but I was disappointed, obviously, because I love the 400; it’s always going to be my favorite race. At sectionals, the 400 was only 10 minutes after the 800, and I didn’t have much time to recoup.
What did you take away from that?
It shows me I need to get after it and try harder. This is only going to motivate me for the future.
Facebook or Twitter?
I’m a Facebook person because I’m into photography. I have a pretty nice camera and I love to shoot photos. I’ve posted over 3,000 photos on my Facebook account, maybe more.
Would you say being a photographer is your dream job?
I would love to travel the world and shoot nature photos for a magazine like National Geographic. That would definitely be a dream job.
If you could go on a run with anyone, who would it be?
I’d go with Lolo Jones. Who she is and what she went through is inspiring.
Who would you cast to play yourself in a film?
There are so many tough choices, but I’d go with Angelina Jolie because she’s a bold actress and can play anything.
Dream prom date?
Channing Tatum. I love him. I’ve purposely seen all his movies.
As told to Logan Malloy
