Karli Kavanagh, who will turn 18 on Sunday, is in her second full season as an infielder on the Indians varsity for Lemont softball.
She will attend the University of Missouri.
How does it feel to be a conference champion?
Great. It’s been a long time for Lemont. It’s still sinking in.
What’s more fun, scoring runs or driving them in?
Both. Any way we can score and put another run on the board, it’s a good day.
You play at the hot corner (third base). How do you like it?
I love it! I’m constantly in the game. I love being able to make plays, instead of just kicking dirt all game.
Some say that the nickname Indians is disrespectful to Native Americans. What’s your opinion?
I think of it as a tribute. I can see where maybe they’d find it offensive, but I think a tribute is definitely a good way to look at it.
Is there any significance to your number (10)?
I’d always been 33, but when I got here they didn’t have 33, and 10 is always my fallback number. I’ve always admired Ron Santo.
What opposing player would you just love to have as a teammate?
Emily Naegele (Oak Forest). She can hit about anything. We’ve put it all over and she’ll just go out and reach for it and pop it over the fence.
Your dream celebrity prom date. Who is it?
Channing Tatum, for sure.
What’s your favorite class at school?
Anatomy and physiology are my favorites. I’ve always wanted to go into the medical field.
When you look in your mirror, what does it tell you about yourself?
That I’m very determined and hard-working, and capable of really doing anything I want to if I put my mind to it.
Tell us something about you that we probably don’t know.
I used to ice skate.
What school do you get cranked up the most to play?
Oak Forest, for sure. This year was the best we’ve played them in a while. It was a battle from start to finish.
The team is coming over for dinner. What are you serving?
Oh, gosh. I don’t cook at all. (Laughing) I’d definitely order out something easy like pizza.
What is your favorite away place to play?
Probably Tinley Park. They have a really nice field. And Hinsdale South.
There is no school and no softball today. How do you spend it?
Hanging out with my friends, if the weather is nice, at the beach or laying out by my pool.
What irritates you more than anything else?
Bad attitude. If you make a mistake or don’t get the hit that you want, you can get down for a second, but deal with it, swallow it and use it for your next at bat.
